The Island of Mafia, located off the delta of the Rifiji River in the southern part of Sudan, is a superb location for those wanting to discover one the last remaining islands that are unspolt. This island is found about one hundred and twenty km from the town of Dar es Saalam and is one of the six districts on Pwani Region in Tanzania.

Mafia Island’s economy is based on fishing and subsistence agriculture, although fishing is restricted in the south of the island within the boundaries of the Mafia National Marine Park. Mafia has a long history that dates back to the 18th century when the island played a significant role as a trading centre for the Persians and the East Africans.

Arabs and Persians would make regular stops on this island when they moved across the coastal waters from the Gulf to Madagascar and Mozambique. The island of Mafia consists of one huge island and other smaller ones. Mafia Island is a huge attraction to scuba divers and light sport fishermen.

Chole bay, Mafia’s original harbor and protected deep water anchorage is dotted with beaches and islands. The bay is surrounded by amazingly clear waters, which provide an ideal environment for snorkeling, sailing, and swimming. A good island excursion package to Mafia will typically include visits to the numerous ancient ruins in Chole.

The horseshoe-shaped Chole Bay is an ideal site for snorkeling, underwater photography, and scuba diving. The Mafia National Marine park, which Chole bay is part of, extends to Kinasi Pass Wall. Kinasi Pass is a sheltered reef comprising several species of hard and soft corals. The reef supports a wide variety of marine life.

Some Mafia Island residents who identify themselves as Washirazi or Wamberwa, and found throughout the island especially in the North, claim to be the Island’s earliest inhabitants. You will also find the Wapokomo in the North, while in the South are small numbers of people of Arab descent, ‘Indian traders’, and Europeans in the tourism industry and aid projects. Ethnic identity keeps shifting as a result of population movements, and changing historical circumstances and contexts.

Mafia Island’s main language is Kiswahili, though locals also speak another dialect called Kingome. Mafia retains a friendly traditional culture that has not changed much from the ancient days. Efforts by the community tourism association seek to preserve the island. The protected Mafia Island Marine Park is supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature and covers Chole Bay, and its surrounding forests and islands.

Mafia Island’s other popular leisure activities include sports fishing, birdwatching, and visits to archaeological sites, villages, coconut plantations, local villages, and traditional boat-building yards. For diving enthusiasts, the best season for diving is from October to the end of March. The Island has two rain seasons: the long rains between March and April, and the long rains from October to Mid-December. Mafia island is easily accessible by road and air from Dar es Salaam and Arusha all the year round.

Shimoni and Wasini Island are among the best grounds for snorkeling and scuba diving in the South Coast region of Kenya. Situated 76 km south of Likoma, near the Kenya-Tanzanian border, the village of Shimoni is renowned for the famous Shimoni Caves where well-preserved wooden crates that were used to transport slaves to Arabia among other artifacts can be found. Shimoni is also the launching point for Wasini Island which is located just a few minutes from the village.

For many years, the 6 sq km Wasini Island has remained unchanged, remaining a small traditional fishing centre. The Island is close to Tanzania and is popular for the coral gardens (beautiful coral reef landscape) and the ancient Swahili-architecture ruins that date back to the Arab settlements of the 18th and 19th centuries. Dhows are the primary means to get to this coral island which has no cars or roads. The Fuba people - a Bantu tribe- inhabit this Island, and number about 1500. The Fuba are generally very friendly people and speak both Swahili and Kifuba languages.

Next to Wasini Island is the Kisite-Mpunguti marine National Park, the most accessible marine park in Kenya. Kisite is situated about 75 miles south of Mombasa and it has a wide variety of fishes and coral. The weather conditions at Kisite are excellent for diving throughout the year. Snorkeling is also possible off the fringing reef of a large rocky islet and a wonderful sand bar which appears out of the blue ocean at low tide.

Wasini and the Kisite marine park are a snorkelers’ and divers’ haven, and host a great diversity of plant and animal life in the protected areas. There is an interesting and prolific bird-life there including the fish eagle and the rare palm-nut vulture.

Green and Hawksbill turtles and seven species of dolphins have been found in the Shimoni complex, and both turtles and dolphins are seen by visitors virtually on a daily basis. Humpback whales are seen regularly on their yearly migration in October and November.

Several fish families have been observed in the area. They include butterfly fish, trigger fish, Emperors, Snappers, Puffer fish, Large Wrasse, and Groupers. The common species found there are Parrot fish, Wrasses, angel fish, Moray eels, Cardinal fish, Scorpion fish, Damsel fish, and rays.

The main snorkeling site, accessible from either dhow or from the beach at low tide is a fringing reef near Kisite Island in the centre of the park. Many of the dive-sites fall within the park as well as the reserve. Behind Wasini Island there are two uninhabited islands Mpunguti Yaa Chini and Mpunguti ya Juu.

To get to Wasini Island you need to take a bus or hire a taxi from Likoni to Shimoni. From Shimoni is a dhow run by Mpunguti Restaurant that will take you to the island.

Malta scuba diving can offer you the experience of having the vacation of a lifetime. You’ll see crystal clear waters full of aquatic life and you just will not forget it.

Before you go Maltascuba diving, however, make sure you know what you’re doing. You should first get certified with a qualified instructor so that you know how to use all the equipment.

That way, your only concern will be to enjoy yourself as you experience the adventure of Malta scuba diving. There’s nothing else like it and it’ll be an adventure you’ll remember for many years to come.

Treat Your Family And Take Them With You!

If you are considering taking the children with you then I would recommend Malta. There should not be any issues regarding renting enough equipment out and you will easily be able to locate a local dive guide.

A qualified guide will be in a postion to assist you in to getter the most you can from your Malta scuba diving trip. You will see all the exciting colors of exotic fish and the beautiful coral and other sea life. Do not make the mistake of forgetting your underwater camera.

The kids will love it as they will get to experience fish and other species of sea life they’ve probably never seen before. It’s an experience that can only come with Malta scuba diving.

Some Basic Instructions.

Whilst it is not mandatory to have certification it most definately is useful. It will be more beneficial if you are not going to be with a guide all the time. You may have trouble renting equipment if you have no certificates or guide with you.

As you can imagine things can go wrong, or not as you planned when you are in open waters. The thing not to do is panic at such things like a chink in your hose or an unusally big fish in front of you.

If you take instructions from a qualified instructor, however, you can be better prepared in case any of that does happen and that will cause you to more thoroughly enjoy your Malta scuba diving trip.

In my opinion Malta is an excellent location to choose for a scuba diving expedition however don’t forget your camera because you will want something to help you remember just how good it was.

by James T Catrell

Relatively speaking scuba diving is quite a safe undertaking providing you follow a common set of safety rules or standards. It is when these rules are violated that folks put themselves, and others, in danger.

We can start off by examining some of the most frequent errors that novice divers make that puts them in a dangerous situation. By doing this I think we can then put some sort of proper perspective on the danegrs of scuba diving and in doing so alter any misperceptions that people may have about the sport.

Failure To Obtain Standard Certification.

Genrally speaking it is not possible to rent out or buy scuba diving gear without giving evidence of some sort of diver certification status. Whether it be a beginner, intermediate or advanced status. What does tend to happen though is that someone will rent or buy equipment and give it to an uncertified “diver”.

We have seen this kind of irresponsible activity increase due to the auction websites that have spread over the world wide web. This kind of thing is a poor reflection of what the scuba community does not want as we need our sport to work within a strongly regulated framework to avoid any bad publicity from accidents caused by this sort of thing.

Diving With Very Few Skill Sets.

There are some dives of a specialist nature that require experience in these areas. Ice diving, wreck penetration, shark diving and canern diving fit into this category.

By attempting these sorts of dives without qualified training you are putting your life at risk. It will not cost a lot of money or time to train in some skills that could save your life.

The Danger of Scuba Diving And Alcohol.

While most people who partake in the sport of scuba diving do so in a safe and responsible manner, there are those who take irresponsibility to new heights. In particular, there will be those who will go scuba diving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

This type of practice has lead to fatalities in the past and no one should enter the water whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Diving Whilst Inappropriately Conditioned To Do So.

If you are mobidly obese and you smoke then you fall into a high risk category as far as undertaking scuba diving is concerned. You have an increased chance of suffering a cardiac arrest whilst diving.

All the issues we have mentioned can be addressed and therefore the danger levels can be reduced significantly. It is down to each individual to recognize them and act accordingly.

Fortunately, in these modern times, you no longer need to go a Physical dive school to learn about Scuba Diving, as it is now possible to get Scuba Diving lessons on-line. In fact, there are many websites that are devoted to Scuba Diving that actually provide you with a chance to learn through their Scuba Diving lessons. They will provide you with certification once you have completed there online Scuba Diving lessons in much the same way as you would otherwise get if you went to a real Scuba Dive school.

Online Courses

Possibly the best option to consider when choosing which Scuba Diving course to take online is to check out SDI recognized Scuba Diving learning courses which is available at www.scubadiver.com. In fact, these online Scuba Diving lessons are given to you by Dayo Scuba, a Orlando based training program that provides you Scuba Diving lessons for a fee of about just eighty-five dollars US.

The key advantage of doing your course online is that it allows you to set your own pace according to your own needs, and schedule them to suit you and you can even repeat your lessons in case you need to go over certain things that were not clear to you at the start of the course. In addition, you will need to answer periodically given quizzes that address the important Scuba Diving concepts. Once you have successfully solved such quizzes, you can then move on to the next level.

If this doesn’t appeal to you another option when it comes to online Scuba Diving lessons is a company called Force-e, which is a SDI approved South Florida based diving centre, which is the premium institution that offers Scuba Diving lessons in the physical environment. With Force-e you get to study the underwater realm as well as learn how to deal with pressure, plan as well as monitor your dives and also learn what it takes to select the proper equipment for your Scuba Diving needs.

Yet another good option is Scuba-diving.net a online teaching institute that operates out of Vero Beach in Florida and offers a number of different courses such as open water scuba, dry suit diving and surface-applied air diving are good examples.

Many Online courses will help you gain at least the most basic understanding of Scuba Diving and when completed you can get your certificate, which is recognized by any scuba business worldwide. After that you should not have any problem in progressing on to training in the open water and other locations.

If you are into diving as a hobby or a pastime, then perhaps this is the time to buy your own scuba diving flippers and a dive kit. Certainly diving is one of the most breathtaking hobby or pastime because you get to enjoy the underwater world. Seeing and visiting different islands all over the world will never be the same once you get the chance to dive to the underworld and enjoy the different corals and underwater species. It is a life of its own with a magnificent view.

But this hobby can be costly, especially if you do not have all the things needed to dive. What usually happens is that you rent those diving stuff and that will cost more money than buying your own gear in the long run. Renting equipment is a good short term option if you are diving for the first time or on vacation. But if you’re serious about scuba diving, then you have got to have your own dive kit. It will save you a lot of money over the cost of renting.

Scuba diving flippers are widely available online. Most companies do sell diving flippers on the Internet and all you need is search for the site, choose which design you want, pay through your credit card and have it delivered. Of course, there are also stores in your community that sell all the gears and material needed to dive.

Diving equipment may be costly, so you can opt to buy second-hand diving gear. If you know of people who scuba dive, you can ask them if they would want to sell their used diving kits when they purchase new ones. Used diving equipments are far less expensive than brand new ones. You can even buy used scuba diving kits on Ebay! It is important, however, that you check and inspect any used products that you buy. You want to buy diving kits at the lowest possible cost, but you would not want to buy cheap ones with quality and usefulness compromised. So before you buy anything that has been used already, check it thoroughly.

Diving is more fun and exciting if you have your own scuba diving flippers and kit. Even if it would cost you a little more initially, you can actually save in the long run because you will no longer need to spend money renting your scuba gear. So to buy your own is really a good investment to make especially for those who make it a point to dive more than once in year or visit and tour islands.

After scuba diving for many years, I became enthralled with the sport and decided to search out the world’s best places to scuba dive. The options of great scuba diving destinations are endless, but here are my top three diving sites.

Beginning with the Red Sea in Egypt, there is no other scuba diving like this place. It is one of the best places to scuba dive I’ve found. The water is incredibly clear and with the right scuba gear, you can dive and see some amazing sea life.

The next best place to scuba dive is in Malta. This place offers great visibility as well, but the diving with scuba gear is protected by the Maltese Island government. When you scuba dive in this amazing place, you will see octopus and rays of every kind.

Finally, the third best place to scuba dive is in Costa Rica. I can’t believe the fish I saw in my dive off the shores of Costa Rica. Scuba diving in the world’s best water is a hobby of mine, so I’ve seen some fabulous fish, but none like the underwater life I saw here. Keep up the great scuba diving and enjoy these wonderful scuba diving locations.

Mechanical devices that are used to compress gas or air are known as compressors. Compressors increase the pressure of gas by reducing its volume. Scuba diving is an underwater sport, and there is equipment that can be helpful to divers. One piece of essential equipment is a scuba diving compressor. These diving compressors are closely associated to pumps that raise the pressure of the fluids and transport it through pipes. Scuba diving compressors are filled with oxygen that helps divers breath underwater. Scuba divers also use diving air compressors. These machines increase the quantity of usable air in the diving cylinder by raising the pressure. Divers may use electro-galvanic fuel cells that are electrical apparatus. They help calculate the amount of oxygen in the diving equipment. These gas-blending compressors mix with other gases like nitrox and trimix and are popular among scuba divers.

Scuba diving compressors are expensive and require heavy maintenance. Dive training schools purchase scuba diving compressors or rent them from various suppliers. There are many scuba diving shops in and around hotels and resorts that provide divers and vacationers with compressors for scuba diving. Manufacturers advertise products by giving dealerships to owners of scuba diving shops and training schools. Many travel magazines have information about scuba diving compressors. People interested in buying one can contact the respective individuals through e-mail. People can also get information about scuba diving compressors through the Internet. There are a lot of websites that offer scuba diving compressors at discounted rates.

Numerous scuba diving training schools offer certified courses. These schools train divers and educate them about scuba diving as a sport. The dive schools and institutes teach students the different ways of handling scuba diving equipment such as compressors.

Some dive organizations appear to be hell-bent on getting as many people as possible to scuba dive. They are then able to release amazing statistics that suggest that everyone and his dog is scuba diving. I can hear a famous ditty ringing in my ears: It ain’t what you do, its the way that you do it! This logic applies very well to scuba diving. Its all very well that 5 million people throughout the world can scuba dive, however, its the way that they do it that really matters. It is often those -I can scuba dive- people who get into trouble underwater and are at risk of finding themselves in an -I nearly died scuba diving- situation.

Who is to blame?

The scuba diving industry or the individual? The scuba diving industry is often given bad press for reducing their scuba diving training course requirements and/or course length. You could also apportion blame to the tourism industry who market scuba diving as a blissful recreation that no holiday is complete without! Alternatively you could blame society for our in-built consumerism and drive to spend money. However, it is also the responsibility of the individual diver to make sure he or she knows as much as they can about the risks of scuba diving and what to do if something goes wrong.

So, it is up to each individual diver to weigh up the risks and benefits of scuba and ensure they have a realistic view of what is involved. Ultimately, if you dive, the buck stops with YOU!
